Wolfenden - The Oval Wing

Wolfenden was the most coveted hostel to stay. Strategically located near the crossroads that lead to the two ladies’ hostels, it offered the best of cuisines in the mess and a topping, in the form of a panoramic view of the grand Oval, our prized possession and second only to the Eden Gardens, across the river.

Wonderfully architected, having a central tower spreading branches on the three wings across all the three floors, distinctive names aptly reflected the amenities available at ‘Wolf’. The ‘Dhobi Wing’ typically facing the college backyard, derived its name from the melodies that came from the adjacent staff quarters. Whether there were dhobis at all is a disputed history. Nobody however disputed the name of the ‘Pandya Wing’ – logically deriving its name from the senior ladies’ hostel that came right in its line of sight. Haven for a heartbreak Romeo tracking strategic movements of his beau. That the hospital and the bank lay closer to it was inconsequential in giving it any different name.

Nature had a bountiful presence across the views from the ‘Oval Wing’. The grandeur of the lush green outfield was compounded by the boulevard running on its three sides and a gothic structure on the fourth. A dense fog precipitated the ground on chilly wintry mornings till the sun shined in full splendour in the afternoons. The fact that the boulevard led to the other ladies’ hostel only helped in adding colors to the green when the damsels took the way.

It was destined to be a memorable stay when we moved to the ‘Oval’ in the summer of ‘92

Clementina laid as usual, across the open space from Wolfenden; oblivious of the growing romance in the air around . The graveyard was recently cleared. I could now catch a glimpse of the name on the tomb right from my way.

However, as the monsoons set in, greens grew thick and fast, putting her into hiding yet again. The memorable chapters however did not unfold till the time winter arrived.
